It's time for better sun solutions.

INSPIRATION

Practical Clinical Experience

With over two decades of experience as a dermatologist, I have witnessed firsthand the misconception that clothing alone provides adequate sun protection. Many patients are unaware that the UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of a typical white T-shirt can be as low as 3, offering minimal defense against harmful UV rays. Recognizing this gap in sun protection, I embarked on a decade-long research journey dedicated to understanding the intricate interaction between textiles and the skin. What I discovered was a market saturated with textiles treated with chemical sunscreens, raising concerns about overexposure to these substances. Motivated by the need for safer alternatives, I developed patent-pending textiles that prioritize quality sourcing and construction techniques to deliver sustained UV protection without the reliance on chemical sunscreen treatments. These textiles represent a paradigm shift in sun protection, offering consumers peace of mind without compromising on safety or efficacy.

FIBERS

Contrary to common belief, the mere presence of certain fibers in textiles does not guarantee adequate UV protection. Our published studies have shed light on this misconception, revealing that even materials like bamboo and polyester, often lauded for their supposed inherent UV protection properties, may not offer as much shielding against harmful UV rays as previously assumed. Surprisingly, our research has shown that bamboo and polyester fabrics can have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) as low as 11 when tested individually, despite being marketed by some brands for their natural sun protection attributes. These findings underscore the importance of rigorous testing and evaluation of textile materials to ensure they provide the level of UV protection necessary to safeguard against sun damage effectively. As consumers, it's crucial to look beyond marketing claims and rely on scientifically validated data when selecting sun-protective clothing.

TEXTILE CONSTRUCTION

Textile construction plays a pivotal role in determining the efficacy of UV protection, as evidenced by our research and corroborated by numerous studies in the field. Even when utilizing the correct UV-protective fibers, such as those with inherent sun-blocking properties, the manner in which these fibers are knit or woven together significantly influences the textile's ability to block UV radiation. Our findings, along with those of other researchers, consistently highlight that improper construction can compromise the effectiveness of UV protection. Specifically, textiles with inadequate density or excessive porosity allow UV rays to penetrate through, reducing their ability to shield the skin from sun damage. Therefore, attention to detail in textile construction is paramount in ensuring optimal UV protection and minimizing the risk of sun-related skin concerns.
